Ecuador observes 16 public holidays. Inti Raymi in June is an indigenous solar festival observed primarily in the Andean highlands, with cultural significance that predates Spanish colonization.
Colombia observes 18 public holidays, the most of any country in Latin America. Several are moved to the nearest Monday by law, creating a predictable string of three-day weekends across the calendar.
Chile observes 21 public holidays. Fiestas Patrias on September 18-19 anchors a multi-day stretch that reliably takes out a full week of availability each year.
Brazil observes 15 public holidays. Carnival in February is a full-week national shutdown — offices close, deadlines pause, and the country effectively goes dark.
Bolivia observes 15 public holidays. Carnival in Oruro is a nationally observed event tied to both Catholic and indigenous Andean traditions, drawing workers away from even urban centers.
Belize observes 17 public holidays. Garifuna Settlement Day on November 19 marks the 1823 arrival of the Garifuna people on the Belizean coast and is one of the most culturally distinct observances in Latin America.
Argentina observes 23 public holidays. Bridge days (puentes) are regularly declared by the government, extending long weekends in ways that are not visible on the standard calendar.
Panama observes 15 public holidays. November alone contains four independence-related holidays clustered within three weeks, creating a month that operates at reduced capacity.
Costa Rica observes 20 public holidays. Semana Santa is a full-week shutdown — not just Good Friday — with beaches and travel fully occupying the workforce from Palm Sunday onward.
Nicaragua observes 24 public holidays. La Purisima on December 7-8 is one of the loudest and most widely observed religious celebrations in Central America, with street processions running through the night.
El Salvador observes 17 public holidays. The August Festival runs the first week of August in honor of El Salvador del Mundo, the patron saint of San Salvador, and is a full-week city-wide celebration.
Honduras observes 15 public holidays. Semana Santa is a near-total national shutdown, with coastal towns and rural areas completely emptied out for the full week.
Guatemala observes 17 public holidays. All Saints Day on November 1 blends Catholic and Maya traditions into a multi-day observance that includes elaborately decorated kite festivals at cemeteries.
